One Direction was formed back in 2010 by Simon Cowell, during the British singing competition “The X Factor.” Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, auditioned as solo artists but were later grouped together by Simon. Although the boys didn’t win, they ended up in an impressive third place that launched their careers.
The band released their debut single “What Makes You Beautiful” in 2011, which launched their album “Up All Night”; that was the start of their prosperous career. They ended up releasing five albums from 2011 to 2015, from which they went on tour, winning various awards and records.
However, at the start of 2015 Zayn officially announced that he was leaving the band. The four continued to release music until the band officially went on hiatus at the end of the year.
Since then, all of them have released music, so here is what’s been going on in their lives ten years later:
Since the band went on hiatus, Harry released his debut solo album “Harry Styles” in 2017, which received a lot of positive criticism. His single “Sign of the Times” received high praise and was even named Rolling Stone Magazine’s Song of the Year. That same year he starred in the movie “Dunkirk” by Christopher Nolan, making his debut as an actor. Just recently, at the end of last year, he released his second album “Fine Line”, which debuted, just like his first album, as No.1 on Billboard’s 200. This year he is going on his world tour “Love on Tour.”
At the age of 26 Niall has released two albums. The first one back in 2017 named “Flicker”, which debuted as No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 albums chart. The single for this album was “Slow Hands”, which is one of his most popular songs. He even collaborated with Maren Morris for this album in the song “Seeing Blind.” His sophomore album, “Heartbreak Weather”, just came out this past March with three lead singles: “Put a Little love on Me”, “No Judgement”, and “Nice to Meet Ya.” He has also won some big awards during his solo career like the American Music Award for New Artist of the Year.
After One Direction Liam was seen dating “X Factor” judge Cheryl Cole, with whom he had a baby boy named Bear in 2017. That same year he released his hit single “Strip That Down” featuring Quavo, which was co-written by Ed Sheeran. It managed to reach No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Since then, he has released his EP titled “First Time” in 2018, and his album “LP1” at the end of last year. Liam has collaborated with lots of artists like Whiz Khalifa, Rita Ora, Pharell William, Zedd, and J Balvin.
As the first member to leave the band, Zayne released his hit single “Pillowtalk” at the start of 2016. The song was his first single since leaving One Direction, and it immediately reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. His debut album, an alternate R&B record, was released two months later with the name “Mind of Mine”, and it also debuted as No.1. That year he got the American Music Award for Artist of the Year, and the following year he got the Billboard Music Award for Top New Artist.
In 2017, he released another hit single this time by collaborating with Taylor Swift in the song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” for the soundtrack of the movie “Fifty Shades Darker.” At the end of 2018, he released his second album “Icarus Falls”, and in 2019 he collaborated with artist Zhavia Ward on the cover for Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin.
After the band went on a break, Louis welcomed his first son, Freddie, who was born at the start of 2016. That same year he released his single “Just Hold On” with Steve Aoki, which he dedicated to his mother who had recently died from leukemia. He released a few more tracks like “Back to You” featuring Bebe Rexha, “Miss You”, and “Two of Us”, which won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Single: Male Artist. In 2018 he also participated in the US version of “The X Factor” as a mentor and judge. This year he has released his first album named “Walls”, and said he is set to go on tour this year.
